Bicycle Potraits

The Bicycle Portraits project was initiated by Stan Engelbrecht (Cape Town, South Africa) and Nic Grobler (Johannesburg, South Africa) early in 2010. Whenever they can, together or separately, they’re on the lookout for fellow commuters, and people who use bicycles as part of their everyday work, to meet and photograph. They’re finding out who rides bicycles, why they ride bicycles, if and why they love their bicycles, and of course why so few South Africans choose bicycles as a transport option.

When Stan email me the link of his projects, i was drawn to these images of very different types of South Africans and their bicycle. These photos are so beautiful that make me want to go to Africa to see these commuters myself. And maybe visit our friend, RH, from Mozambique Bike Culture :)

Sebenernya di Indonesia juga banyak yah commuter yang bener-bener pake sepeda setiap hari. Kayak tukang roti, loper koran, tukang es krim, dan emang-emang lainnya. Tapi kita ga pernah merhatiin, karna kebanyakan dari kita mikir "Ya udahlah, emang-emang kan emg pake sepeda karna emang dia cuman punya sepeda" dan jadi ga terlalu ngehargain mereka. Tapi hey, apa bedanya kita sama mereka? Kita sama-sama bersepedah, sama-sama ngehirup asap di jalanan, sama-sama kena terik matahari kalo lagi panas. Mungkin yang beda cuman dari sepeda yang dipakai.
Hey, stop being shallow. Masa kita mau nilai orang dari sepedanya? Kalau kita nilai dari effort nya, malah mereka yg effort nya lebih gede. Mereka dengan sepeda yang biasa aja bisa tiap hari pake sepeda kemana-mana.

dengan 8 kali istirahat, 2 botol aqua, satu kotak kacang hijau, sebotol pocari sweat dan 2 batang coklat, akhirnya kami sampai di Bumi Sangkuriang dengan selamat dan penuh keringat.
